I had a conversation with a colleague last weekend that got the gears turning inside my head.
He is not a collector, nor involved in the hobby in any way, shape or form.
He’s a huge sports fan, baseball and basketball, in particular, and can rattle off stats, trends and the most current events in either of these sports at the drop of a hat.
Over the past six months, however, he’s been asking me more and more about the hobby, about my collection and business.
As a kid he was, like most sports-loving boys, a pseudo-collector of Topps, Fleer and Donruss baseball cards.Â
The Milwaukee Brewers were his team then, since he hails from Wisconsin and still is his team to this day.Â
He remembers the days of Robin Yount, Paul Molitor and Cecil Cooper, and can recall each of their Topps cards like it was yesterday.Â

This is not a list of gripes or grievances. Rather, these are changes and tweaks that could be added that would improve my enjoyment of the hobby. Some of these are major changes that have little chance of happening and others are minor adjustments that I wouldn’t be shocked to see shortly. Just for fun, I’ve rated these in terms of ease of implementation and likelihood of seeing it happen.
Little Changes
1. Nine. There are nine pockets in a standard page that holds cards. Do you know how many sets are divisible by nine? I don’t either but it’s not many and drives me a bit batty every time I finish a set and put it in pages. Those blank spaces always seem to be mocking me accusingly. Super-easy fix: make the checklist of every set divisible by nine.
Quick Hits
NFT News- Sorare is keeping the fun going with their new World Cup fantasy/NFT hybrid game. None other than Lionel Messi has joined up for the epic contest that will draw the attention of the entire globe. If you thought their MLB offering was great, be sure to check out the World Cup game.
Vintage- Maybe you want to delve into the realm of vintage baseball card sets, which I totally understand. However, you don’t have an extra $3 million lying around for some of the higher profile, higher grade, Topps or Bowman. Well, this set may fit the bill — click here for more.
Pop Culture News- This one is only still good for a couple of days so don’t drag your feet. Post Malone has teamed up with Magic: The Gathering to create a special set featuring none other than the singer as his very own MTG creature. The drop is still live but closes soon.Â
Grading News- CSG’s line-wide 20% off sale is paying dividends in grading volume. They still remain 4th in sports card grading volume, but they saw a substantial bump last month likely due to the new pricing structure. SGC also saw a strong increase in volume. The next couple of months will be interesting to watch as everyone scrambles to react to PSA’s price drops/sales.
