Nonsense Newsletter #55: Black Friday Shopping Guide and a Brief Look at Hobby News.
Sponsored by SGC Cards gosgc.com
In light of the holidays, this week’s newsletter is a bit shorter, but we didn’t want to leave you without your weekly dose of hobby news. The whole SCN newsletter team is thankful for you all letting us write about the hobby we all love and we sincerely hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Let’s face it. Collectors are finicky. That makes them tough to buy presents for. While it’s great to take a pause to be thankful, now that you are well into your turkey-induced food coma many of you will engage in the time-honored tradition of Black Friday shopping. The hobby has been in such boom times the past couple of years that deals were hard to come by so you might have overlooked the hobby in your bargain hunting.
All of the major retailers are offering deals this week though so it’s time to put on some sweatpants, wake up from your tryptophan naps, and get ready for some holiday hobby shopping. We’ve got you covered with the newsletter’s first-ever Black Friday Holiday guide. This will help you figure out what to give the sports card collector in your life or maybe it will help you figure out what to ask for (or buy for yourself, we won’t judge).

Quick Hits
Grading News- The narrative on social media is that grading is dying. This ignores reality. A year ago, when grading was supposedly booming, PSA graded over 640,000 cards in October. In October of this year with the demand that’s supposed to have dried up, PSA graded over 1,000,000 cards in October. That increase comes at a time in which all of the other grading companies have seen increased volume as well. There are some numbers in the hobby that do give me trouble, but I’m not worried about grading slowing down.
NFT News- This article looks at the intersection of NFTs and sports gambling. It’s an intriguing use of NFTs and we’ve already seen NFTs do well with fantasy games. If you haven’t already, go check out the Sorare games as they are easy to use and offer some great prizes.
Pop Culture News- Allen & Ginter is now out. One of the big draws each year is the non-sports stars, especially the autographs. This year’s auto checklist follows the trend of declining quality in recent A & G releases but has a few gems. Alice Cooper and Landon Donovan jumped off the checklist for me. Check out the full checklist and see who you like.
