Nonsense Newsletter No. 110: Bowman 1sts, The Magic returns and so much more!
In this week’s festive edition of the Nonsense Newsletter, John Dudley delves into the deep waters of Bowman 1st (including Tom Brady, of course). I rediscover all the Magic in my life, which is not a bad thing. And, of course, as if I need to remind you all every week — the Quick Hits section is mind altering! So, grab some egg nog and a sugar cookie and kick back, because you’re about to enjoy this week’s edition of the Nonsense Newsletter.
Tom Brady’s Bowman 1st is setting the card world on fire. It’s odd to think of a newly released Bowman 1st of a retired player as these normally are issued at the onset of a career, but collectors don’t seem to mind. They’ve heartily endorsed Bowman’s new attempt to manufacture Bowman 1sts retroactively for some dual sports stars.
With success come imitation. That means we can expect a few more Bowman 1sts of older stars who never had Bowman cards (like the Ruth issue earlier this year). It also means mining the archives for more two sports stars that either played in the MiLB or at least were drafted. So, what players can we expect to see in the future and can any of them bring the same hobby attention that Brady has. Here’s a quick look at the top five players that could have Bowman 1sts soon.
Tucked away in the back of the closet in my home office is a yellowed cardboard 500 card box, the edges round and tattered.
Honestly, I nearly forgot about it because it has been there for such a long time.
This box has moved four times, been in attics, basements and eventually in the darkest corner of a closet that rarely gets opened.
Change is in the Air
Recently, however, I’ve been in my once-a-decade-home-office-remodeling kicks, and thus have literally dismantled the entire room — rearranging, reorganizing and flat-out pitching stuff from this sacred space tucked in the far corner of the house.
So, last week, I stumbled upon that yellowed box.
The moment I saw it, I remembered what it held, and a lot of memories came back to me quickly.
You see, back in the day, nearly 25 years ago when my brother and I were setting up at regional card shows, we took a chance on a concept that we both agreed was just cool.
We were one of the first to delve into the Wizards of the Coast waters back then, and one of the rare dealers who had both sports cards and Magic The Gathering cards in the same space.
Quick Hits
Hobby News- This year has been slow in terms of new products. Topps gave us Topps Xpectations yesterday though ending the year with a bang. The set features two autos per seven-card box. Collectors might recognize the design from a few Topps and Upper Deck early 2000s sets. The big draw is the fact that every single card in the release is numbered no higher than 99. This looks like one that could be a hit with the breakers.
Pop Culture News- The great Lorcana drought is over. Booster boxes of the original set can now be had for under $150 and the new Rise of the Floodborn set has seen box prices drop to under $200 after peaking at over $350. It is a volatile market for sure, but the influx of cards is great for the longevity of the game even if it drops prices initially.
Vintage- If you’re into vintage wax and incredible finds, then check out this article on Sports Collector’s Daily! It will blow your mind! It’s a 60s and 70s bonanza! Click here to read more about it.
Hobby News- McDonald’s isn’t a stranger to card promotions but a recent release might be going under the radar. Their current Adult Happy Meal features classic McNugget toys reimagined by artist Kerwin Frost. Each toy comes with a card which can be easily missed or forgotten. There is a popular gold McNugget chase and I’m curious to see how long it takes some of these cards to make their way to the graders.
