Nonsense Newsletter No. 163: The allure of Bowman, Super Bowl stakes, grading volume on the rise and more!
Yo! Welcome to the 163rd edition of the Nonsense Newsletter — it’s crazy to think we’re approaching 200 editions! Thank you all for allowing us to share our love of the hobby with all of you every week! That said, this weeks’ edition keeps true with the tradition set here of being the best sports card newsletter on the planet! John Dudley talks Super Bowl stakes. I delve into Bowman baseball and the allure of a product where 90% of the players will never see a Big League stadium. And, of course, the Quick Hits are dope! (the kids call things that are good dope). So, let’s settle into another beautiful edition of the Nonsense Newsletter!

Super Bowl Sunday is upon us and this year’s is a great matchup in terms of hobby-relevant players. These are the eight guys I think are vying to change their place in the hobby (players are solely motivated by their football card values after all). A great game can change their cardboard legacy while a bad game might send their cards spiraling. Let’s see whose cards have the most to gain (or lose).

I love baseball cards.
It’s where it all started for me, and many of us, in fact, and where I always find my heart leading me back to — baseball.
One facet of the hobby that I find both fascinating and frustrating is the subject of prospecting — investing in players who are barely old enough to vote in this country, and putting dollars behind players that will likely never see a Big League field, as a player at least.
Yet, Bowman Chrome autos, color and numbered cards frequently outsell cards from well-established veterans by large margins.
Let’s take a look at what I’m talking about here.
Quick Hits
Hobby News- Grading volume continues to go up with record numbers in January. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise as several major grading-heavy releases are starting to hit the pop reports including Prizm and Bowman Draft. Ohtani’s Topps Now 50/50 celebration card was the most graded card again which is a strange place for a Topps Now card, especially one that sells for $20-$30 in PSA 10 grade. Check out more at Gem Rate.
Vintage- It’s Super Bowl week so we must discuss something to do with the big game. So, let’s dive into Super Bowl champ, and legendary Dolphins quarterback, Bob Griese! Find out about Bob here.
Hobby News- Topps Star Wars Antiquities is Topps' new ultra-premium offering. With stunning on-card autos and gorgeous oversized original art cards, the product has been getting quite a bit of attention the past few days. Topps also has the new Star Wars Hyperspace at a much lower price point. The product has some design elements that make it reminiscent of Cosmic which fits Star Wars quite nicely.
