Nonsense Newsletter No. 182: MTG tie-ins, Some guy from Dallas and more!
Good morning people! Welcome to another edition of the Nonsense Newsletter! I’m you’re tour guide, John, and this week we’re making stops and taking a look at Magic The Gathering tie-ins, a stud-in-the-making in the Big D, and we’ve got a Quick Hits section that is extra juicy! So, on this beautiful Saturday morn, let’s kick back and really soak in this week’s edition of the Nonsense Newsletter!

What do Captain America, SpongeBob, the shirtless Jeff Goldblum meme, and Optimus Prime all have in common? Give up? They’ve all been the subject of Magic: the Gathering cards in the last few years. The IP-driven cards make fun collectibles, and I’ve found myself drawn to them recently.
Long-time readers of the SCN Newsletter may recall that I attempted to get into MTG a couple of years ago. I dabbled for a bit, built a fun dragon-themed deck to play Commander with, and … promptly lost interest over about six months. I stopped playing and sold my cards efficiently via Card Conduit, which I can highly recommend. So, why am I buying new MTG cards?
Final Fantasy. That’s why. Well, that and LOTR, Transformers, Jurassic Park, Street Fighter, Princess Bride, Monty Python, well, you get the idea.

’s the offseason in the NHL (in case anyone other than myself cares), and that means it’s the offseason in the hockey hobby as well.
So, not only does this mean I switch my gaze to baseball cards, but it also means I start meditating on a handful of players in the league that might be skating under the radar heading into the 2025-26 season in October.
And….. drumroll, please… for me that guy is Dallas Stars young stud, Wyatt Johnston.
Okay, maybe this isn’t the most obscure name out there, but I do believe strongly he’s a guy that has room to grow, despite playing for a team that doesn’t get a ton of hobby love anymore.
What’s my reasoning for this pick?
Quick Hits
Hobby News- Not every card has to be of a HOF player. This article celebrates some of the excellent players from 1971 who many have forgotten. Check out the “essential” cards from 1971 Topps here. It’s a fun trip with some great-looking cards.
Vintage- Here’s a story I can totally relate to — it’s one about being under appreciated (just sayin’). The article isn’t about my life though, it’s about 1949 Bowman baseball. Still, you see what I’m gettin’ at here. Find the article here.
Hobby News- PSA is getting into the repack game, providing packaging and security for CardsHQ (GeoffWilson’s company). It’s an interesting partnership in the rapidly growing repack space. Worth watching for sure. More info can be found here.
