Sponsored by SGC Cards gosgc.com
Buckle up for this week’s edition, ladies and gentlemen, because we’re getting a little personal here and talking about our hobby regrets (like the time I was selling Jordan rookies for $450 each back in the day). John Dudley breaks down the NFC, and Jessie and Mike answer more questions on YouTube. So, you know the drill by now — grab your favorite beverage, settle in and enjoy another edition of the Nonsense Newsletter.

Several years ago, my wife had a garage sale.
In my years of being married, I have learned a few things along the way. Among these things, is when my wife decides to have a garage sale — just nod in agreement and stay out of the way.
So that’s what I did.
After all was said and done, the sale was over after a few days, people stopped loitering around my house, and there was less stuff headed back to the basement than there was heading out to the garage.
Plus, my wife was happy with how it went and had a little extra spending money (which she was likely going to spend at other garage sales in the coming weeks).
So, all-in-all, I considered the weekend a success.
Fast-forward a few years.

Last week I previewed some of the AFC’s top players to watch for in the hobby. This week it is the NFC’s turn. For each team, I’ve highlighted a player for each team that might see big gains or losses in card value this season. Being on this list could be either a good or bad thing.
I’ve also included a representative card for each player. These are not necessarily the player’s best cards but are meant to give a familiar reference point. These also give me the ability to check back in at midseason and the end of the season to see if the projections were any good or not.
NFC East
Dallas Cowboys– Over the last 25 years, only the Browns, Washington, and the Lions have won fewer playoff games than the Cowboys. The once proud franchise is mired in a quarter century of promising but disappointing teams. Dak Prescott will undoubtedly put up numbers. The only question that matters though is can he win playoff games? Projection and Pricing: Dak’s 2016 Prizm RC goes for around $150 in a PSA 9 grade and slightly lower raw. While I think his card will fluctuate a little during the season, barring an unforeseen MVP run, I don’t see them catching fire until he wins a playoff game. The narrative against him is just too strong. On the other hand, he will see big dips at the first sign of struggle. Projection negative.
Quick Hits
Pop Culture News- Star Wars Sapphire Box prices have settled back down to under $1000, but there have been some notable single sales with a pair ending just north of $6400. One thing that stands out is that card #1 of Luke Skywalker stands heads and shoulders above the rest. Confusion or debate over what cards are other characters ‘base’ or ‘main’ cards are keeping prices comparatively affordable given the traditional popularity levels of other characters compared to Luke.
Vintage- The famous “Mr. Mint,” was known for many things in the hobby, and his 1986 find of a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle is one that stands out. Well, now that card, which was freshly graded by SGC at a Mint-Plus 9.5, is up for auction at Heritage. Read more about this landmark auction here.
NFT News- Like NFTs bit couldn’t get to The National? No worries. Here’s a handy run-down of all the NFT goodness at the show including a certain party with Mike and Jesse. While that’s obviously the showcase event, there is a fairly broad range of NFT action at The National this year.
Grading News- The 10-million-dollar elephant in the room this week is the SGC 9.5 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card that is up for auction. Arguably, the most iconic trading card ever, this copy is particularly amazing as it has been described as the nicest copy in existence despite three PSA 10s existing. There is a lot of information about this card out there, but Sports Illustrated had an excellent article about 1952 Topps Mantles that is worth checking out.
Join us at the National to win lunch with Jesse and Mike!
We are giving away the opportunity to have lunch with Mike, Jesse, and the rest of the Card Shop Live team. In addition to lunch, you will get to open a hobby box with the team! Whatever you pull is yours!
