I spend an awful lot of time writing, researching, discussing and, admittedly, obsessing about sports cards.Â
Heck, it’s not a stretch to say that trading cards are my life (which is both super-cool and a somewhat sad indictment on the excitement level of my existence to this point).
Either way, I study all the major sports — the hockey, the football, the baseball, the hoops — and truly enjoy delving into the hobby as much as I can, as often as possible.
Recently, however, another passion of mine has permeated my life, and that passion is golf.
Believe me, it’s a very slippery slope I trying to navigate here, given my passion for the game and my love of the hobby.
That said, I started to add a few golf cards to the collection and even more to watch lists and saved searches.Â
Why?Â

Draft days, the opening of free agency, and trade deadlines are all major events in the seasonal cycle of sports, but the hullaballoo hits hardest in the hobby. MLB’s trade deadline came and went, but not before altering the landscape of the game and the hobby. Let’s check out a few of the biggest trades and see what effects they are already having on card values.
1. Padres get Juan Soto and Josh Bell. Nationals get Robert Hassell III, Mackenzie Gore, C.J. Abrams, Jarlin Susana, and Luke Voit.
Hobby Impact: The obvious player to look at here is Juan Soto. Soto gets a change of scenery to a contender and gets to play with one of the other young stars of the game. Collectors are excited as Soto’s US300 PSA 10 has gone up to $135 from $110 in the few days since the trade.Â
Quick Hits
Pop Culture News- I never thought we’d be covering a mark Zuckerberg card, but here we are. A signed little league card/photo of the social media mogul is up for auction and expected to fetch some serious coin. Check out more about it here.Â
Vintage- A 206 Honus Wagner SGC 2 went for a record-breaking $7.25 Million at the conclusion of a Goldin Auction last week. The new price tag tops the previous SGC-graded Wagner high-water mark of $6.6 Million set last year. Crazy!
Grading News- Major news from the world of grading as gemrate.com posted their July numbers for the grading companies which are the first to be affected by the PSA discount. While none of the $18 cards are included in the PSA pop report, the effects can be seen in the large drops the other grading companies saw. We’ll keep watching to see if this means lower prices are around the corner.
NFT News- NFTs can be fun, but they can also be educational. This recent piece from Forbes delves into how sporting NFTs are being used to educate people about history. Pretty cool!
