Tucked away in the back of the closet in my home office is a yellowed cardboard 500 card box, the edges round and tattered.
Honestly, I nearly forgot about it because it has been there for such a long time.
This box has moved four times, been in attics, basements and eventually in the darkest corner of a closet that rarely gets opened.
Change is in the Air
Recently, however, I’ve been in my one-a-decade-home-office-remodeling kicks and thus have literally dismantled the entire room — rearranging, reorganizing, and flat-out pitching stuff from this sacred space tucked in the far corner of the house.
So, last week, I stumbled upon that yellowed box.
The moment I saw it, I remembered what it held, and a lot of memories came back to me quickly.
You see, back in the day, nearly 25 years ago, when my brother and I were setting up at regional card shows, we took a chance on a concept that we both agreed was just cool.

Who’s the most undervalued player in the NFL right now? It’s a big question and a common one. I’m not talking player salaries, though; I’m talking card values. Everyone has ‘their guy’ stashed away, just waiting for the moment that the rest of the hobby world catches on. Tackling a question this big without writing an answer that’s 100 pages long needs some guidelines to limit the discussion.
The Rules
First, a few ground rules. No unproven players on this list. To be truly undervalued, one has to have already demonstrated a high level of competency. For that reason, I’m only considering players with a Pro Bowl appearance and at least two full years in the league. That’s a low threshold but eliminates many of the hobby’s biggest names. I find most initial value from draft hype takes about two years to completely vanish so there’s another solid reason for this one.
Second, I’m looking for long-term value. There are some players I think could see great movement in the short-term like Saquon Barkley, but I’m not sold at all on his long-term prospects. This list is looking for long-term growth, though and not the quick flip.
Quick Hits
Pop Culture News- Topps released their second Sapphire version of the original Garbage Pail Kids line. This version covers Series 3 and 4 of the original set. Topps has done a strong job recently in branching out with Sapphire and T206 lines of pop culture issues.
Vintage- if you love hockey and the hockey hobby, then you’re somewhat familiar with this iconic series. This year, it turns 50 years old. Sports Collectors Daily took an in-depth look at this series this week. I highly recommend giving it a read by clicking here.
NFT News- Every team, athlete, program, or celebrity worth their salt seems to be putting out NFTs. None have quite the star power of this most recent one, though. Boasting two genuine GOATs, Tom Brady’s newest venture teams up with Tiger Woods to create NFTs for the PGA tour. More info here.
Hobby News- The news about Topps forgetting to pack out the SP auto rookies of the late additions to Topps Chrome is everywhere, but in case you missed it. Here’s the latest. While this one has gotten the publicity, Topps Finest Flashback had its own distribution issues with multiple orders canceled and then shipped and some orders double shipped. Topps Now has also seen issues with a Julio Rodriguez card sent out without the rookie logo and then the replacement card also issued to some without the rookie logo.
