Nonsense Newsletter No. 60: Hockey update, hobby nonsense, a new and fresh podcast and more!
In this weeks staggering edition of the Nonsense Newsletter, John Dudley adds to the nonsense by writing and nonsense (it’s brilliant!). Meanwhile, yours truly finally gets back to jawing about hockey. Oh, and the Quick Hits section is …. bananas! So, let’s just take a second to take all that in, and then dive in to this week’s edition of the Nonsense Newsletter!

Non-sports cards are having a moment. Fanatics is running around snapping up IP licenses, TCGs are the hottest thing in the hobby, and there is finally a Hobby Nonsense podcast from Jesse Gibson, one of the hosts of the O.G. Sports Cards Nonsense podcast.
I think non-sports cards can go to even new heights in the next decade. TCGs are already doing great, but I’m curious as to how non-TCG non-sports cards can gain a bigger following in the hobby. I’ve got a few ideas below and would be curious to hear others in the comments.

Let’s spend a few moments here today and talk about something that is oft-ignored in the hobby — hockey.
It’s been a while since I’ve graced this digital space with anything about one of the greatest games in the world, as well as one of the most amazing spaces within the hobby.
But, this time, instead of singing the praises of the hobby I love — I’ve got a few bones to pick with it.
Namely, with the issue of tunnel vision that has swept over the hobby over the past year or so, give or take.
I’m referring, of course, to the Connor Bedard frenzy that has consumed every corner of the hobby and, much to my disappointment, turned the hockey hobby into every other facet of the industry.
Quick Hits
Hobby News- Topps has released their design and checklist for 2025 Topps Flagship. You can check it out here. 2024’s design has become a favorite so 2025 has an uphill battle. Some parallels have been added (wooden, canvas, and a variety of foils) and others seem to be gone (Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Team Logo). The loss of the Team Logo parallel is especially sad as it was one of the best Topps has done in years.
Vintage- Anyone who knows me would tell you that I love my Barry Manilow music, my deep-dish pizza, and 1980 Topps Ricky Henderson rookie cards. Now, I’ve been sending these into PSA for years now, desperate for a PSA 10 grade and little did I know, I could find one at auction right here.
Hobby News- The Hobby Nonsense podcast launched this week and if you haven’t checked it out yet, what are you waiting for? It’s hosted by Jesse Gibson from the SCN podcast and focuses on all things non-sports. Check it out wherever you procure your podcasts.
