The NFL is winding down its regular season.
Teams are shuffling, clawing and scratching for a spot in the postseason — it’s super exciting!
Heck, me, as a Detroit Lions fan, am more excited than I have been for decades!
That said, the football hobby is ramping up as well.
So, I’m dedicating my space in this week’s edition to….
You guessed it — hockey!

2022 took a financial toll on most everyone’s collections, but still brought a lot of highlights as readers of the newsletter saw last week. While waxing poetic about the past is fun, it is often better to look ahead to what the future may bring. I’m expecting a lot out of the hobby in 2023 and expect it to be an eventful year. This is a quick look at what’s on my radar for the year.
The Rookies
For better or worse, our hobby is dominated by the chase for rookie cards and 2023’s class looks great across the board. The boom years in the hobby were bolstered by all three major sports having exceptional rookie classes from 2018-2020. Most years have at least one sport that isn’t quite up to snuff though (2021’s baseball, 2022’s football). Luckily, 2023 looks to be a winner for all three.
Quick Hits
NFT News- Fanatics sold its 60% stake in NFT company Candy recently. It’s the latest development in what is being dubbed “Crypto Winter.” More info here. There is rampant speculation that the move was done in order to bolster any future public IPO that may be in the company’s future.
Vintage- Heritage Auctions has vintage collectors drooling over its latest offerings — dozens of complete vintage sets! It’s a virtual paradise for fans of aged cardboard. Among these is a complete set of PSA 8 graded 1956 Topps baseball, as well as a complete set of 1952 Bowman with every card graded a PSA 8. Check out more by clicking here.
Pop Culture News- Looking ahead to the future, one of the most intriguing 2023 releases will be Magic the Gathering’s Lord of the Rings-inspired set. LOTR has fans of the books and films worldwide and fits the MTG oeuvre perfectly. Although a later-year release, it’s not too early to put it on your schedule if it is up your alley.
Grading News- PSA announced new price levels for most of their tiers. Unlike other recent sales, these price drops look intended to set new permanent pricing. Most interesting is the new bulk rate of $19 a card with a $499 value per card maximum. No responses yet from the other companies, but it shouldn’t take long.
The Break Battle is officially on sale!!
