Nonsense Newsletter No. 71: The MLB Central, PSA gem-rates, vintage wax for auction and an 82-year old getting real rich from fake Jordan RCs. All this and a little more!

In this week’s incredibly intelligent edition, if I say so myself, of the Nonsense Newsletter, John Dudley breaks down the MLB’s Central Division. I prove that I can indeed write about something based on numbers and investigative journalism ( hint: I talk about hockey gem-rates). We take a quick glimpse at scams, sets and an auction that is so hot it could melt wax (let’s hope it doesn’t do that, though). All this great stuff and more! So, take a deep breath or two, relax, and be prepared to have your mind blown! Welcome all, to this week’s edition of the Nonsense Newsletter.

The Central teams are stuck in the middle in my 2023 baseball preview. Last week was the Western teams’ turn and if you haven’t seen it you can check it out here. While they are in the middle, I’ll make sure to give them the full attention they deserve. I’m highlighting one player for each team that I am interested in from a hobby perspective this year. These might not be the best players on these teams but they are the ones with the most compelling hobby storylines. I’ll also use my crystal ball to predict if these players’ cards will go up, down, or just stay the same during the season. Remember, these predictions are for fun and not any kind of investment advice.

In this week’s edition of the SCN Newsletter I’m actually going to talk about something that doesn’t necessarily fall into character for me.
I actually plan to discuss a topic that is based on facts, statistics and real numbers.Â
I know, you didn’t think it was possible did you?
Well, believe it or not, I am actually a very scientific fella.
Except for the rare moments where I enjoy a good tussle with some of the hobby’s most polarizing topics, that or, I just want to complain about things.
This week, however, things are going to be different.

Quick Hits
Hobby News- Topps is still taking orders for their Road to Opening Day team sets. These are always fun as you get bonus cards sent throughout the year for incredible performances and for each round of the playoffs your team makes it to. Topps was kind enough to let us know which players were the subject of parallels this year which allows for strategic buying. The Diamondbacks, for example, guarantees a parallel of Corbin Carroll or Gabriel Moreno numbered to 99 or less. That said, these sets are more for fun. The limited parallel subjects means limited sets. The Orioles have already sold out. Check out the rest here.Â
Vintage- If vintage wax is your mojo, then boy, oh boy, does Hindman Auctions have some stuff for you! An 89-lot auction kicks off this month, and it is one that is sure to satisfy even the most diehard vintage wax fan. Among the goods up for bidding is a box of 1986 Fleer basketball and a 1980-81 Topps basketball box. And this is just a couple of the banger boxes you can get your hands on at the right price. For more, click here.
Grading News- In case you missed it, an 82-year-old was charged for producing phony PSA-graded items. He acquired cases and then put in cards with a realistic looking PSA label. No telling how large the actual operation was, but he is charged with producing at least $800,000 of fake slabs. More info here and remember, if a deal seems to be too good to be true, it probably is.Â
Pop Culture News- The award for strangest new memorabilia cards goes to the upcoming 2023 Historic Autos Civil War Edition. They’ve obtained a rose from Abraham Lincoln’s funeral and incorporated pieces of it into memorabilia cards. And because you are likely already humming it, here is a link to that Seal song that’s probably already stuck in your head.
