August. Blech. It seems like If you are on the planet, pretty much you are hot right now. Hopefully, the card releases for the month will be equally as en fuego to give you another reason to stay inside. Sadly, for most sports, this looks to be more of a winter’s harvest than a summer’s bounty.
Football is the big winner though as 2023 products come roaring out. Most collectors are sick of 2022 football and basketball as the draft classes were underwhelming compared to recent years. With football firing on all cylinders again and basketball poised to do the same, it’ll be interesting to try to see how much of the depression in those markets was a true downturn and how much was just bad rookie classes. Without further ado, let’s see what I’m excited for this month. As always, there are plenty of other releases too. These are just the ones I’m most intrigued by.

I’ve penned nearly 100 of these columns for this newsletter over the past couple of years, and for the most part, I think I’ve held my own in terms of writing about something that is semi-interesting.
I’ve tried my best to lean upon decades of experience in the hobby, thousands and thousands of conversations with folks about the hobby, and tried my best to take an angle to each topic that was a little bit off-the-beaten-path, which is how my mind works, anyhow.Â
I have, and continue to, enjoy each and every word I type for this newsletter.Â
That said, I’ve neglected one facet of my duties for far too long.
I haven’t done a very good job of tossing a topic out to all of you, of getting your thoughts and opinions directly on a subject.
It’s my hope that this will start a more direct conversation with you, and many others.Â
This hobby is about relationships, I am hoping to start a better one with each of you.Â
Quick Hits
Hobby News- Tacofractors are causing folks to scratch their heads, but it appears Topps has something up their sleeves with them. It appears there is likely a promotion with them that has yet to be revealed. Clever internet sleuths found a landing page for it on the Topps’ site. Right now, it just tells us to hold onto out Tacofractors and watch out for info. Check it out here.Â
Vintage- the National Sports Collectors Convention always creates a buzz around something or another, and this year it appears to be signed vintage cards — which, if you think about it, is very buzz-worthy. Check out this wonderful article about this very topic by clicking here.
Pop Culture News- Topps Star Wars Sapphire Return of the Jedi has not proven to be the hit the first Star Wars Sapphire offering was. Boxes have sold for under the initial sale price at auction and the singles market is moribund at best. It’ll be interesting to watch this over time as singles will dry up but boxes won’t get ripped due to high pricing. That means that most of the autos will stay hidden in sealed boxes for quite a while. I’m interested in checking back on this one in a few months.
Hobby News- Goldin is now the place to get official authenticated game-used and signed items from Bobby Witt Jr. and last year’s hobby darling, Julio Rodriguez. If successful, expect to see the program expand to more players. Both of the young stars are showing their true character and offering the items for sale to benefit charity. More info here.
