In this week’s exquisite edition of the Nonsense Newsletter, John Dudley takes a step back and explores the overreactions to week 1 in the NFL. I talk numbers in the hobby, and the Quick Hits section will probably change your life forever (just kidding, but it is pretty good this week!). So let’s make a deal here to sit back and enjoy this week’s offering!

Week 1 is in the book. That means it is time for collectors to panic and overreact. Let’s check in with the market and evaluate if collectors are underreacting, overreacting, or if they’ve got things figured out. Below is a list of players that either had big games or should have stayed home.
The Bad
Aaron Rodgers- The worst news from the opening week has to be the loss of Rodgers for the year. I’m too sad for them to even taunt the Jets fans. Rodgers is a veteran surefire HOF quarterback and collectors are treating him like one. His PSA 9 Topps RC was going for about $75 before the injury and is holding strong at the same price.
Verdict: Proper reaction, Collectors are being rational.
Justin Fields- Blech. Fields delivered what one should expect from a Bears quarterback, not much. His PSA 10 Prizm dipped to an average of $50 down from only $55. The fact he wasn’t priced that high to begin with shows that collectors are more interested in real football than fantasy.

I open a lot of hockey cards.
I break them myself on my stream, or I get involved in breaks in other streamer’s rooms.
Nonetheless, it’s pretty much what I do now, most every night at some point.
I enjoy it (especially the breaking part of it) and I’ve met some amazing folks as a result.
However, one thing I’m noticing, and I’m assuming this is the same in other sports, is the crazy number of numbered cards coming out of packs.
Everything, aside from the flagship products, seems to contain a slew of numbered cards.
Out of 1299.
Out of 999
Out of 499
Out of 99… and so on.
Initially, this was cool, but nowadays, there are so many numbered cards that they almost lose their impact, their cache, their value.
Quick Hits
Hobby News- Baseball and Magic: the Gathering? Sure, why not? The Superdrop this season combines planeswalkers with a baseball card aesthetic. Superdrops for the uninitiated reprint some of the game’s favorite cards with exclusive new artwork. You can check them out here.
Hobby News- It’s Bowman Chrome week! Bowman always brings excitement and along with a slew of talented prospects, this year’s introduces Bowman 1sts for those players who never had one. Featured in this release is Babe Ruth and there is already a stunning $200,000 bounty for the 1/1 version.
Vintage-It’s a story of one of the NHL’s most fabled hockey lines, the Triple Crown Line. If you like hockey, and you like old hockey cards, give this story a shot by clicking here.
Hobby News- It’s also Ginter time! The product is a love-it-or-hate-it release every year with its esoteric subject matter interspersed with traditional baseball cards. The highlight is the autos and this year doesn’t disappoint with one of the best and varied checklists in a while. The only downside is Topps continuing to include employee cards, this time as autos. It’s time to put that gimmick in the garbage bin and maybe reassign/reevaluate the employee who is pushing these cards. At the least, Topps needs to offer replacements or a buyback program for the collectors who get these “hits”.
