Editors Note: This week’s newsletter will be short and sweet. Mike Gio was in an undisclosed location getting some much needed R&R and I had some unexpected family stuff come up this weekend so I didn’t have the time to devote to really make this one sing! Next week, we are bringing the heat. We will be bringing on guest writers in the future on weeks like this.
Fanatics Follow-Up
The boys got the big scoop from Fanatics this week. Quick recap:
MLB, NFL, NBA deals are done and exclusive for a term of 15 years
They raised a $350M Series A round with blue chip investors
They expect to build a one-stop shop for all trading card needs
Breakers, Wholesalers, and Ebay may be in trouble here
Josh Luber is running the show
In short, they’re planning on disrupting the hobby and seem to be declaring war on the existing infrastructure. Some of this is needed, some of this isn’t. It will be interesting how the graders, eBay, whatnot, and the distributors react to this. They now know there is a target on their backs and the question is, will they innovate and create a better product and experience for buyers and sellers? Will eBay aka as card sellers derisivelty call them, “Feebay” change their model or will they end up like Blockbuster video? Blockbuster was famously hated by its patrons for its late fees. Will eBay evolve? Will the distributors be able to make the case that they’re good for the hobby? These are the questions that we are looking at going forward but nonetheless, this is going to be an exciting time.
Jesse’s Comic Book Unboxing
While Mike was pounding virgin-Pina Coladas in a sunny, undisclosed location, Jesse was finally free to pursue his true love, comics. Check the video for the magic.
Random Rant
Ladies and gents, we need to talk. Dan Marino went to the Superbowl in his rookie year, Dak, Mayfield, and Russell Wilson, Pat Maholmes had great rookie years. The thread between all of them, sans Mayfield is that they were all drafted late to pretty good teams. Most rookie QBs stink. Most of their teams stink, ESPECIALLY high draft picks. That’s why they’re picking in the top 5/10.
Stop the suicidal Facebook posts selling your Lawrence, Fields, Wilson cards after a few games. Stop being marks and start being sharks. If you’re looking for returns on QBs, this should be a long term play. You should be looking at these early rookie struggles as buying opportunities. Think of the cards as being “on sale”. Here is what I have bought over the last few weeks while you nervous nellies sell for 60% on the dollar. Click here to keep reading…..
Nonsense
On Monday’s Podcast, the boys gave you all you need for the upcoming MLB playoffs wit MLB Network’s Mark Feinsand
On Thursday’s Podcast, which was tape delayed and recorded late on Wednesday night (The boys were loopy and gave you everything they had left), the boys dropped more of the exclusive Fanatics scoops from earlier in the week. Big talk about Zion, kissing babies, and a lot of late night giggling.
