Nonsense Newsletter No. 42: Good Folks, Magic The Gathering & More
Sponsored by SGC Cards gosgc.com
In this week’s amazing edition, John McTaggart witnesses a random act of kindness, John Dudley waxes poetic about Magic The Gathering and the guys get serious about The National on YouTube. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a buffet of brilliance in this week’s installment of SCN Newsletter. Let’s Go!!

Every week I’m charged with coming up with about 400 words about something hobby related.
Sometimes I write about hockey (because people need to know more about hockey). Other times it’s more reflective on the three decades I’ve enjoyed in the business.
Either way, I try my best to be relevant, open, honest, and unfiltered.
This space is an excellent place to be each of the above, for sure, and for this I am grateful.
But this week’s column I’m going to spend telling a story about something I witnessed at a card show this past weekend.Â
Now, the show that is the backdrop of this tale is the farthest thing from the National, or even most regional shows.Â
It’s in a small hall in a small town.

Collectible Trading Card Games (TCG) are some of the hottest cards in the collectibles world. In fact, PSA graded more TCG cards in July than any other kind of card. The TCG category is the single biggest in the grading world currently and looks to stay that way. CSG has done well in its first-year grading, but not nearly as well as their TCG division housed with CGC.
Pokemon is the undeniable king of the TCG world, but it is the runner-up that I am more interested in currently. Magic: The Gathering has captured fans since its release in the early ‘90s. The game and the cards have a lot to offer collectors and are worth a first look, or a second look, for collectors looking to expand beyond sports. Collectors can approach MTG in a variety of ways. Enjoying the new pop-culture offerings, picking up old favorites, getting hooked on the game itself or any combination of those are all reasonable approaches to checking out MTG.
Quick Hits
Pop Culture- Topps is releasing 2022 Star Wars: The Mandalorian Beskar Edition this week. The set plays on the Beskar from the show but is pretty much a standard Topps Chrome set featuring Baby Yoda. Sure, it’s called The Mnnnnnnnnnn, but we know who moves the merchandise. Each box contains either an auto from the first two seasons of the show or a sketch card.
Vintage- Not everyone in the hobby was at The National a few weeks back. Instead, some folks, including Jeff Weisenberg of National Card Investors, were on the hunt for rare baseball cards. Weisenberg found them, completing the acquisition of nearly 1000 T-206 cards. Read more about this amazing collection here.
Grading News- PWCC recently sold a PSA 9 Hank Aaron rookie for $720,000. There are three copies that have graded a PSA 10, leaving one to only guess at the heights one of those copies can reach.Â
NFT News- NFT company Heir, owned by Jeffrey Jordan son of that MJ, is focusing on producing NFT of up-and-coming high school athletes. They are holding a showcase of all 18 signees and of their tech in Atlanta on September 9th and 10th. More info is available here.
